We began the day with a video on the rainforest. We learned many new and interesting facts about the four rainforest layers. The rainforest video discussed the different products, fruits, and medicines that come from the rainforest. (oranges, grapefruit, pineapples, chocolate, sugar, vanilla, coffee, ginger, cashews, teak, mahogany just to name a few) We learned a lot about epiphytes. Did you know that orchids and bromeliads are epiphytes?

This week both 4th and 5th grade had wonderful guest speakers.
Mr. Chugani and Mr. Asthana shared their knowledge of the stock market with the classes and answered all our questions! Everyone, including Mrs. O'Brien and Mrs. D'Amelio learned new things about the stock market and how it works. Everyone continued to watch their stock investments and the news that might affect them. Some student's have earned over $6000 in the past few weeks! We can't wait to see what the future brings for our stock choices. This week we each selected a state to research. We are going to plan an educational field trip to our chosen state and prepare a presentation to share what we learn and to convince others that it would be the best state to visit.
Today in class we worked on the scientific method. We discussed the different steps of the scientific method and why they are important to include in our investigation. The third grade students selected their consumer products to test. A letter will go home next week with the children's selections and information for parents on their specific project.
Today in TAG we began our research project on the rainforest. We read a lot about the first two layers of the rainforest. We took notes and wrote down the most important information about the emergent and canopy layers. We studied what plants and animals call this layer home. We had some time to create these two layers in Pixie, a computer program. By the end of our rainforest unit we hope to create our own podcasts about the rainforest.
We had great excitement in TAG this week when we checked to see if our stocks had gone up or down in value. Some of the stock portfolios had a gain of over $6000 in just one week! We also researched for news that might affect the stocks we chose. Everyone has been writing questions that they have been wondering about pertaining to the stock market. We read the beginning of a book that answered many of our questions. Ask us about how the stock market got started!
This week we completed our research about the different regions of the USA. Each group got to teach the rest of the class about the region they studied!
Today in TAG we were able to finish up our packages from last week. We discussed the scientific method along with safety rules that should be followed when we are doing our experiments. We talked about the terms control and variable. We have homework tonight. Our homework is to talk with our family and decide on 3 products that we are interested in doing an experiment on.
We watched a video today that took us to the rainforest. This helped us to see what an actual rainforest looks like. We learned that the Amazon rain forest supports a large ecosystem. This ecosystem is home to more than 1600 species of birds and about a million different kinds insects.
This week we began a stock market simulation where we each inherited $100,000 to invest in the stock market. After doing a little research on Wally's Stock Ticker and Yahoo Finance, everyone picked four stocks to invest their money in. We will be keeping track of the stock's activities for the remainder of the year and watching the news for current events that might impact the stocks value.
