Jay S., a fifth grade student at Alpharetta Elementary School won third place for his entry “We All Need Trees”. Jay entered the Fulton County Soil and Water Conservation District Contest in April. This poster contest was open to all fifth grade students in Fulton County. Jay created his winning entry using sharpies and Crayola markers. With Jay’s award comes a cash prize of $25.00.
Today we finished out this school year in TAG by learning about what scientists have to go through to clean up an ocean oil spill. We discussed the harmful effects that oil spills have on the environment, food chains, ocean plants, and animals. We learned too that it is important to keep our oceans clean because 94% of life on earth lives in the ocean.
Parents please be on the look out for TAG folders, flash drives and report cards. On our final day of TAG for this school year the children presented their state Power Point or state brochure to the class. The students also shared with everyone the most interesting information about their state that they learned about through their research.
Folders, flash drives and TAG report cards went home with the children today. Everyone had fun building their final K'Nex rides, running experiments and exploring roller coaster physics sites for their final day of TAG.
Report cards, folders and flash drives went home today with our students. Have a great summer! We worked together in teams today to clean up an ocean oil spill. In this simulation activity we used different "equipment" to see which would clean up the spill more effectively. We could select from cotton balls, medicine droppers, feathers, paper towels, tissues, yarn and napkins. We discussed the problem that the oil causes on the wildlife, food chain, and the economy. We also tried to clean a birds feather dipped in oil with DAWN detergent in the same way that volunteers try to clean up birds that have been caught in an oil spill. We focused in on ways that we can help our oceans.
2nd grade flash drives, folders and report cards went home today. See you next year! Today was the day that we worked on editing our state brochures. We checked our projects against our rubric and our personal goal. We soon realized that it took a great deal of time to line up titles and check font sizes and make sure that our final product was professional looking. We learned a lot about editing and tweaking today. We felt proud of our final product.
We are learning about sharks today in class. Sharks are fish, but unlike fish sharks do not have bones. A sharks skeleton is made from cartilage. Did you know too that sharks can't float? They have to keep swimming or they will sink. Sharks are also different from fish because they do not have scales. Sharks are covered with little teeth called denticles.
Today we took the Gifted Resource Student Learning Objective Test. We finished up the day by continuing our work on Amusement Park rides or creating roller coasters online using roller coaster physics interactive sites.
