Ask your child what they learned about the parrot fish today.
We spent a great deal of time on the coral reef today. We learned where the coral reefs' are located and what types of plants and animals live there and also how they provide us with food and medicine. We saw a few short videos that talked about the coral polyps and we learned what they have to do to survive. We talked about the symbiotic relationship between the clown fish and the sea anemone, and we also discussed how pollution, soil erosion, and global warming are hurting the coral reefs. Ask your child what they learned about the parrot fish today.

Students are working to complete their state brochures. They are typing, adding images, editing their work, and conferencing with their TAG teachers. We only have a few more weeks to get our big project completed. Whose state will be selected for the class field trip?
Due to the Georgia Milestones our short TAG day was a catch-up day. Some of us worked on our kelp forest pictures and others worked on an introduction to the coral reef. Next week we will have a full day of TAG. :)
Construction has begun! We brainstormed about all the things that a company needs to do after acquiring land and before construction can begin. Then we learned about investors and banks. The groups had to count all the K'Nex pieces they would need to construct their rides. After calculating construction supplies costs and estimating labor costs, the groups asked their investors for start up money. Writing checks and keeping a bank ledger was more complicated than it looked!
We were very busy in class today working on our state field trip brochure, conferencing with our teachers, and editing our work. A few of us got to work on creating a state game where we got to design a game board and write the questions for our game.
Class was short today due to the Georgia Milestones testing in the morning.
We talked about otters today and learned several cool facts about them. Did you know that sea otters are the only mammal other than primates that are known to use a tool for collecting food? Did you know too that otters have about the densest fur of any mammal? We also watched otters swim around during class today on a live otter cam. Sea otters were the focus of our shortened TAG class today. We watched a video called OTTER 501. This video explained how the Monterey Bay Aquarium is working to save the California sea otters from becoming extinct. It was interesting to see how they taught this baby otter "501" to dive, hunt, eat and fend for herself. In the time that we had left we created our own sea otter ~ kelp forest PIXIE pictures.
Why is algae important? That is what we researched and discussed today in TAG class. We watched a short video on the kelp forest and learned why kelp is important to ocean animals and people too. We learned all about the different types of food in our pantry that have kelp in them. Did you know that some types of ice-cream, pudding, toothpaste, and mac-and-cheese have algae in them. Look for the words alginate, carrageenan, or beta carotene on your ingredient labels. Check it out!
