Today we are finishing up a project based learning assignment where the second grade students create an ocean fish and habitat zone for their new fish. Students also include details in a written paragraph as to what their fish needs to survive and how it functions in its habitat. The children have really enjoyed working on this project.
This week the groups worked on their park maps and began creating Power Point presentations. Each group will present their plans to the city council asking permission to build an exciting amusement park in their community.
Today's task was to continue to research and gather information on the 4 destinations for our class field trip. We focused on how to make our opening sentences rock. We worked on several opening sentences as a class. Then the students continued to work on collecting information and pictures of their choices and writing about them for their brochure.
This week we are focused on bioluminescence and bio-fluorescent ocean plants and animals. We finished reading The Magic School Bus on the Ocean Floor and we watched a NOVA special on Creatures of the Light. We learned that only female angler fish have a light lure or eska. We spent some time creating what we learned today in PIXIE.
This week we worked on the final drafts of the newly created amusement parks. We also began working on a Power Point presentations to propose building the parks in the location we carefully selected last month.
Today students took notes on one of their field trip destinations. We modeled how to turn their notes into an exciting paragraph. Many children also added photos of their destinations to their TAG folder.
We have been working hard selecting the perfect place to build our amusement parks. We have been checking that the site locations have adequate accessibility for visitors by both roads and air travel, the climate is suitable for the park to be open for most of the year, that the area is safe and that it is well populated with people to both visit and work at the parks. Each group has designed a new amusement park and we are creating maps of the parks.
Today in TAG class we worked on creating a personal goal on our rubrics page to go along with our state brochure expectations. We continued taking notes and we read and discussed the book But I Read It On The Internet by Toni Buzzeo. This book talks about the importance of using a website that is current, accurate, and created by a person or organization with knowledge of the topic that we are investigating.
Today we zoned out, ocean style! We learned about the different ocean zones, The Sunlight Zone, The Twilight Zone, and the Midnight Zone. We also talked about bioluminescence and how the fish in the Midnight Zone use it to catch their prey or escape from a predator.
