We finished up the epidemics unit this week with a guided tour of the AES café. Ms. Vickye and the cafeteria staff taught us about food safety. We got to see where the delicious school lunches are prepared and learned about how the food is stored, cooked and handled to ensure that everything is properly prepared and safe to eat. Ms. Vickye has an impressive record with the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness- all scores of 100 for years and years!
This week we ended our Kitchen CheMystery Unit with toothpaste. We read Dr. DeSoto, and watched videos on how toothpaste and toothbrushes are made. Then we learned about attributes and secret formulas. We practiced using medicine droppers and teaspoons. We tried different ingredients to see how we could make our toothpaste foamy and clean the best. We used calcium carbonate as our main ingredient in our toothpaste and many of the children selected mint as their flavor of choice. TAG students took their toothpaste home to try out.
Report cards went home too. Our Consumer Fair presentations are today, Dec. 9th, at 9:00.
We hope you can join us to learn about our favorite consumer goods. We learned about Typhoid Mary and the transmission of communicable disease by health carriers this week. We studied the problem from different points of view (Mary Mallon, the health officials, the families of the people Mary infected, and the general public).
We also did a glo-germ experiment that simulated how germs are spread and we found out that we should do a better job washing our hands! This week we finished working on our Power Point presentations. We hope everyone will be able to come to our Consumer Fair presentations next week, Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 9:00 to find out which brands turned out to be the best consumer buy and why.
