This week we learned about money and how it is made. We even started making some new money ourselves!
In TAG class today second graders completed a job application so that they could work for the Department of Wildlife and fly to Alaska and solve a problem that was happening in Pigeon Creek. Teams of students used clues to solve the mystery about the declining salmon population in the creek and what could be done about it. We learned several reasons for the salmon populations decline (pollution, dams, warmer water) and learned what is being done to increase the number of salmon. We also discussed how important salmon are to the food chain and how many animals depend on this cold water fish.
Today in class we took a walk through the canopy layer of the rainforest. We learned that there are many animals, birds and insects living here because this is the layer with the most food. You can find different types of monkeys and butterflies living here as well as epiphytes, tree frogs, bats, jabirus and passion flowers.
Today we completed day 3 of our stock market simulation game. We also checked the current value of the real stocks we are watching and began researching our favorite company.
Everyone worked very hard today to finish their Power Points for the upcoming Consumer Scientist Experiment presentations.
Today we learned how to make pictographs in Excel to display the results of our consumer brands taste test experiments. Then we analyzed the data and drew conclusions about the results of our experiments. Everyone started a Power Point project for our upcoming Consumer Scientists presentations.
Students visited Yellowstone National Park today by researching and taking notes and then creating a scrapbook with their information using PIXIE, a computer software program. This was a fun way to show what we know about the world's first national park.
Today we learned a lot about ring-tailed lemurs. We watched a short video and then read background information on these interesting animals. In our decision making lesson today it was up to us to decide where the best place to relocate a family of lemurs would be. We created criteria and then used a +, - system to come up with the best answer.
