This week our TAG classes have been shortened due to the IOWA tests. TAG classes stop at 10:30 so that Mrs. O'Brien and Mrs. D'Amelio can administer the tests to 3rd grade students. Stop back next week to see what's going on.

First and second graders teamed up today to create a stable cube out of straws and pipe cleaners. Students worked together using different construction techniques to come up with their finished product. The children needed to use strategies that they learned in an earlier class about triangles being the most stable shape. We discussed how many triangles were in the finished cube and how they related to the number of sides or faces.
Fifth graders continued their lesson on women during WWII. Students selected a woman pioneer to research. They will be turning their research into a magazine cover with headlines and a QR code.
We spent much of our time in TAG today researching places that we wanted to take our class to on our field trip. We had two mini lesson, one on how to find trivia on our state and another one on how to locate and save images into our TAG folder. Mrs. D'Amelio was very busy conferencing with us and giving us pointers on how we could improve our writing.
This week we finished up our artist research and began writing storyboards for our digital story telling projects. We also learned about Jackson Pollock and made some drip paintings!
The children were working hard today to locate information on their endangered Everglades National Park animal. We researched and learned why our animal was endangered and also what conservation attempts were being made to help our animal survive. We will create a brochure from our research.
While the second grade TAG students were on a class field trip, first grade TAG students were measuring each other. We measured each other to see if we were squares, far-reaching rectangles or tall rectangles. Later we discussed line graphs and bar graphs and how to make each. The students decided which type of graph they wanted to make using our class data.
Drum Roll.......The results are in: Tall Reaching Rectangles=7, Squares=2, Far Reaching Rectangle =0. We have continued researching artists this week using a variety of online sources from MackinVia (on the AES website under student online resources). There are many interesting articles, videos, and pictures about the artists we have chosen to research.
We also learned about Norman Rockwell and did a little creative writing to go along with our favorite Rockwell illustrations. Today we discussed the problems encountered by women along with the opportunities that opened up for women during WWII. Our hook was the poster of Rosie the Riveter by J. Howard Miller. We compared Miller's Rosie with Norman Rockwell's Rosie. Ask your child to tell you about each of them and which one they liked and why?
